What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs Surgery is a microscopically-guided procedure performed to remove cancerous tissue from cosmetically sensitive areas of the head and neck and in some cases throughout the body. Due to the importance of complete skin cancer removal and cosmetic restoration, this type of procedure should be only performed by a fellowship-trained and board-certified Mohs and Reconstructive Surgeon. The technique is designed to be tissue sparing so that cancerous tissue is removed while taking the least possible amount of healthy skin. The Mohs surgeon then reviews the layer under a microscope to guarantee all the cancer has been successfully removed in three dimensions (peripherally and depth). Due to the size, depth, location, or appearance of various types of skin cancers, reconstruction is usually required after cure is achieved.
